YAMAZAKI NOBUKO, from Kyoto, employs a material introduced into Japan from the west, small glazed porcelain tiles, but she uses them uniquely as the surface for large, curious sculptures. Her forms are familiar, domestic objects--bedding, shower curtains, shirts, dresses and koi--colorful Japanese carp that are domesticated for garden ponds. The soft textile base of her sculptures produces a paradoxical effect when completely covered by the hard surfaces of the glued tiles - a paradox Yamazaki senses in contemporary human behavior. "The tiles represent a hard, protective covering over our true inner feelings." While her frequent use of blue and white tiles suggest traditional dyed Japanese textiles and her use of the carp evokes traditional Japan, her sculptural works are humorous, often biting messages that resonate with the uncertainties of life in the 21st century. Yamazaki, who began her career as a ceramist, graduated from the Ceramic Department of Kyoto Seika University of Art in 1992. As she began to be recognized for her new conceptual style of sculpture, in 2004 she was awarded a prize for excellence from the Kyoto Arts and Craft Competition for New Artist.
