Hiraishi Yu

Tanaka Nobuyuki, who in his early career also explored kanshitsu as a sculptural material, is now producing large scale vessel forms and long associated with traditional Japanese utilitarian lacquer, but produces objects of unusual size and with sweepingly beautiful forms and lines. Now, in collaboration with architects, he is also producing large scale sculptural pieces. Most recently, Tanaka has been exploring the potential liminal function of large, flat, highly polished black lacquer surfaces in public spaces.

Tanaka belong to an energetic group of well trained Japanese lacquer artist who have drawn attention to their avant garde approaches to new uses of this traditional material, and is involved with important bi-cultural collaborations between contemporary lacquer artists from Japan and Korea.

He is currently an associate professor in the craft department at Kanazawa College of Art.
