Rozome (Roketsu-zome), a wax-resist technique for surface design, is an ancient dyeing technique known universally as batik. It was first discovered in Japan among wax resist textiles from Central Asia, in the 8th century imperial treasure house, the Shosoin. Long associated with dyeing techniques for domestic textiles in Japan, in the late 20th century rozome became a leading form of contemporary fine art, as well as a new dyeing technique for fine kimono. From individual expressions of deep emotions and spiritual concepts through the use of motifs from nature, to abstract concepts and sharp social commentary, rozome has become so Japanized that it has achieved a distinguished and highly regarded place in the world of surface design. This exhibition features five of Japanfs most outstanding rozome artists, including Miura Kageo, one of the pioneers responsible for the transformation of rozome in contemporary Japan.
