Okamoto Yasuo is recognized for his development of a unique technique for surface designs on textiles which is simultaneously dyeing and painting. He first applies a mixture of glue and a chemical based pigment onto the surface of a stretched cotton canvas. While the canvas is in an upright position, he then sprays the surface with water, carefully controlling the flow until an overall pattern begins to emerge. Although he can predict and control the movement of the paint on the surface to a degree, the ultimate design is, in part, accidental. His use of blue pigment often endows his paintings with images that resemble the natural world, such as clouds in the night sky or the rippling surfaces of water.
